This week on the podcast we took a trip down memory lane revisiting The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and it was a blast. Something about those books are so perfect for girly nostalgia and they have one of my favorite features: 4 main characters.
From Sex and the City to Pretty Little Liars, Desperate Housewives and more, I’m a firm believer that the best shows for women have four main characters that you can “choose” to relate to most.
(And if you want to take the FluentlyForward quiz to find out who you are….)
A pop culture pattern I’ve also noticed that comes with four female leads is usually a three vs. one dynamic as well.
For Sex and the City, we have the legendary feud between Kim Cattrall (Samantha) and the other three ladies.
For Desperate Housewives, we have the iconic beef between Terri Hatcher (Susan) and the other three.
And for Pretty Little Liars, Lucy Hale (Aria) recently said on the Call Her Daddy podcast that she wasn’t as close to the other three girls are they were all close to each other.
So it was heartwarming and surprising to find during the research for this episode that all four of the girls for Sisterhood of the Traveling pants were actually close!
However, it did seem like as Gossip Girl shot Blake Lively up the ladder between the first and second movie (the first movie was Blake Lively’s very first appearance in anything) her rising star did make things a bit more tricky. We talked in the episode about an alleged ‘eye roll of contempt’ from America Ferrera to Blake during a press tour, and a blind item about how Blake blew off a 4th of July party with the girls to instead attend Taylor Swift’s 4th of July party (ah, remember those?)
But still, I prefer to pretend that the girls were all perfect friends and remain that way to this day. The likelihood of that being true is about the same as there being a pair of pants that can fit four different women perfectly, but still…if we can do magical realism for the Levi’s then we can also do it for four Hollywood actresses.
